In a stunning display of tactics and technique, The UAM’s First Futsal team defeated Art & Tech, 6-1, in their first ever game on December 9th.
Recently one of our reporters from The UAM Hub spoke with UAM humanities teacher, former MLK Associate Head Coach, MLS Nxt Head Coach, and multiple title winning Coach, Mr. Sherron, about his project of creating an organization to provide a Futsal league for New York City Public High School students.
Mr. Sherron, who simply goes by Sherron, states that “there is a gross inequity in access to time and space because of high costs to play for NYC teens and this project is the first step in a larger plan to counteract this.” The UA (Urban Assembly school) has made a league for other UA schools to participate. UAM has made three futsal teams. “Futsal is something many people play for development or recreation. Whether it was Zidane, Messi or Neymar, or Ronaldinho, they all played futsal growing up and credit it with an important factor in their development.’’ Sherron says.
What is futsal ?
Futsal is soccer but with a smaller ball and it’s a bit heavier and it doesn’t bounce as much. Therefore playing requires a lot of close control and technical ability.
It is also played indoors which requires indoor shoes rather than cleats. Unlike regular soccer which is 11v11 it is played by 5 people on each team with one goalkeeper. Futsal originated from Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930 by Juan Carlos Ceriani.
Futsal is an important factor in the development of a soccer player since it involves a better touch, better technical ability, and more power in shooting. These are all key factors on the big field (11v11)
